Tropical Weather Update 10:15 AM ET | Friday, July 4, 2014 Hurricane Arthur collided with the Outer Banks of North Carolina early this morning as a Category 2 storm, but maximum sustained winds have now fallen to Category 1 strength at 90 mph as of 10 AM ET. Satellite imagery continues to show a well-defined eye and banding as deep convection circulates around the center. Cloud top temperatures show a range of -50 to -60 Celsius, but interaction with a trough to the west as well as movement over cooler North Atlantic waters will begin to weaken the storm over the course of the day as it accelerates towards Nova Scotia. With regards to Maine, Arthur is presently anticipated to bring some significant rainfall to the Downeast coast, particularly to the coast of Washington County. Presently, some 2-4 inches of rainfall is possible for the coast. There has been a tendency for the storm to track further west on model runs, so there is a chance that the impact could be higher if the storm does move westward in its approach, so coastal residents and visitors should keep an eye on updates from the NWS, NHC, and other news media. Once Arthur makes landfall on Nova Scotia, it will weaken as it heads towards Newfoundland and into the North Atlantic. This general motion is expected to continue during the next 24 to 48 hours with a gradual turn to west as the subtropical ridge to the north of the cyclone builds westward.
