Trouble at Circle Time and Listening Time Most schools require children of all ages to sit still, be quiet, and listen for increasingly long periods as they mature. This does not come easily for many children, especially those who are sensory seekers. Accommodations might include: An inflatable cushion that allows kids to wiggle a bit while remaining seated on a chair or the floor. Hand fidget tools that keep hands busy and out of trouble. A Time Timer helps students “keep it together” by giving them a visual cue about how much longer they are expected to be quiet or focus on a given task. A weighted lap pad or weighted vest that gives calming sensory input as well as a physical cue to stay in place. Frequent movement breaks that meet childrens natural need to move and explore the world through their senses. Youll find many additional sensory smart recommendations to help your child stay comfortable and tuned in at school in our book, Raising a Sensory Smart Child available in your local bookstore, library and online at sensorysmarts and sensorysmartparent. If you are a clinician, teacher, psychologist or doctor be sure to check out my new book, Sensory Processing Challenges: Effective Clinical Work with Kids & Teens, also available at sensorysmarts and in stores. Most parents will want to read this one too! -Lindsey Biel, OTR/L
