Trucker Trivia: Deisel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is required for all - TopicsExpress

Trucker Trivia: Deisel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is required for all commercial trucks made after 2010 that want to use California roads. The fluid is made of aqueous ammonia, basically a compound of the most common chemicals found in mammalian urine strangely enough. The way it works is that a diesel engine removes most if the Nitro Oxides in the xatalytic converter and then the DEF essentially converts the rest into ammonia and nitrogen, which are harmless, The urea attaches to the molecules in the exhaust actually. Trucks, like mine, that have DEF systems emit about 1% carbon monoxide, 9% nitrogen and ammonia and about 90% water. All due to an organic chemical called urea and some water, which when combined is called DEF. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diesel_exhaust_fluid
