True obedience is an expression of worship. It comes from a grateful heart wanting to express love and appreciation for all God has done for them. True obedience comes from a right heart, a right relationship with God through the power of the Holy Spirit. To obey out of obligation, duty, fear of hell or peoples judgement, pride, guilt or shame is nothing more than behavior modification. You can not control sin. It took Jesus dying on the cross to defeat sin and the only way to defeat sin is with a right heart, and a right heart only comes through a real, active relationship with God. Obedience that comes from a right relationship with God with leave you with joy, peace, fulfillment, blessings and so much more. Obedience that comes from obligation will leave you feeling tired, frustrated, overwhelmed, angry, full of guilt and shame and anxiety. It can even make you feel like you are missing something, like you dont belong or God doesnt care. God does care. It hurts Him to see you struggle, to see you trying to overcome something on your own that can only be done through His strength. You can never obey because you want to, because you have to or by focusing on the sin. You can only truly obey by getting right with God and maintaining a right relationship with Him.
