Trying to build quality muscle by doing only isolation exercises is like trying to build a house, windows first. A great physique, like a great house, is built on a solid foundation. The basic lifts: squats, deadlifts, bench, overhead press, rows, pull-ups (and their variations) are to a physique what concrete, rebar, and 2x4s are to a house. We think isolation exercises are useful, but better used as a workout finisher. :)
