Trying to stay active over the winter is not hard if you shovel a - TopicsExpress

Trying to stay active over the winter is not hard if you shovel a great deal of snow, but there is little opportunity to ride a bicycle, run, or do other aerobic activities on a regular basis without getting into the snow and ice on the street. So, in anticipation of spring and walking the links where I hope to play the best golf of my life, I have begun a self-designed health program to reduce my weight and increase my physical well being. Although I am not a big fan of counting calories, I recognized that I was clearly taking in more calories (i.e., energy) than I was expending in my daily activities. I have always known this, but now I intend to do something about it. My new smart phone offered a perfect solution, an app to help me count calories. My goal is to consume fewer than 1500 calories a day and to add some physical activity to my day ... in addition to lugging wood pellets into the basement and shoveling snow. Reducing my caloric intake is an easy process that requires that I input everything I eat into my smart phone. The app keeps a running total of the calories consumed. I fell off the wagon once when we went out to eat at Red Robin. I calculated the red robin smoke and pepper burger, with steak fries, and side salad over shot my daily target by about 1,000 calories. While the meal was very enjoyable, it must remain an infrequent pleasure. To increase my physical activity, I joined a local health club. The cost is reasonable and the facility is quite nice, I simply have to commit to going at least 3 times a week. So far ... so good. When I go, I spend 30 minutes on a stationary bike, a few minutes on the rowing machine, and the rest of my hour trying different machines designed to help tone different parts of my body. Donna and Dan have joined me in my quest for more physical activity. Since starting this program a week ago, I have lost 12 pounds. Ill keep you all informed as to my progress.
