Trying to write a Tarantino-ish scene: Inside some obscure Burger King in mid west, two friends are sitting chatting while eating whopper burger and drinking coke. I had told you about my visit to India, right? No, when was it? It was last year, I had accompanied my wife. No no no, technically my the-then-girlfriend. She was into this yoga, pranamaya and all that eastern shit... The friend laughs. ...there I met this kannada scholar You mean a canadian right? No no, not Canada, Kannada. K A N N A D A Whats that? Kannada? Its an Indian language Oh is it? Those mo-fos dont speak english out there? They speak english. Some speak better than you and me. But listen to this, they have different mother tongues. I mean they have a gazillion mother tongues out there. In a menage-a trois in India, all three people will be screaming in three different languages No shit Yeah man. But thats not the point here. Where was I? Ah, this scholar. I was at his home. He was listening to some song which went something like You guy you gaudy...It was some new year song for them it seems You mean, they all sing that on 31st night, right? No you dumbass, this was a hindoo...they dont celebreate no 31st night. They have some lunar calendar. Some deep hindoo thing. I ask this gentleman, what this song means...and he tells me Eons and eons may pass, but this memorable day keeps coming back... What the hell that supposed to mean? Exactly my question. I ask this gentleman. I am no Victorian, so stop talking British and explain it to me in American The gentleman looks deeply into my eyes, and says coolly... The friend listens in rapt attention... ...in American it means New year, same shit... (On the radio: Aakashavaani bengalooru...kelugara korike...mandyadinda papanna, subbamma, krishna, kenchegowda...chikkamagaloorinda ramesha, suresha, natesha, radha, gajapathi...chitra kulvadhu...haadiruvavaru s janaki...)
