Tucked away in central Washington state is a lingering byproduct of the Cold War: 56 million gallons of toxic nuclear and chemical waste, currently being stored in leaky, underground tanks at the Hanford nuclear site. Enter Hanfords Waste Treatment & Immobilization Plant Project, a factory scattered across 65 acres that will eventually encase nuclear leftovers securely in glass for long-term storage. But like many of the Energy Departments big engineering projects, the treatment plant has become plagued by slippery deadlines and massive cost overruns. To make matters worse, the treatment plants most prominent critic, Walter Tamosaitis, was re-assigned after raising concerns over safety, then eventually fired this year.
