Tuesday - Sept 9th - 5 Months By Carol Buzalsky — 21 minutes ago Its hard to believe tomorrow will be the 5 month mark of moms admission to the hospital. Just imagine 5 months in a hospital bed with only a few times that first week sitting in a chair otherwise its been the bed or a medical chair. Mom hasnt been outside except for one short adventure to the court yard at Mayo and the trips to different facilities. Pretty much each week, sometimes every two weeks, mom has a change in the provider following her. Sometimes its a provider that was with her previously and other times provider who hasnt had mom before. Yesterday was the start of a provider mom has not had. He asked to meet with me today to discuss moms care. Usually this means a very grim discussion regarding what a long path mom has yet to go, are you sure of this, are you sure of that and the conversation can really lead a person to second guess decisions being made. Today, however the discussion was POSITIVE and AMAZING!!! He commented that it took him about 5 hours to read through moms chart and catch up on what has been going on. He said that a month ago the doctors were not very promising in their notes regarding moms outlook. He was so surprised when he walked into her room yesterday and saw her smiling face. Today he discussed with us the positives. Her kidney functions are improving, she is not on dialysis, she is not on the ventilator, she is smiling, getting nutrients and participating in therapies. The plan is to keep on that track and improve her nutrition, push her therapy sessions and most important of all keep a positive attitude. Mom was pretty tired when he was in her room today and kept dozing off a bit. The doctor kept touching moms shoulder and telling her to wakey wakey. Mom did have a bit of a rough morning with nausea and did get sick to her stomach. This was right about the time they were going to take her to radiology for the imaging swallow study so that ended up being postponed until a later date. The wound care nurse was in to change the dressing on moms hip wound vac while I was there today and I was SHOCKED at how the wound looked. It is finally getting smaller, has pinked up and is getting granulated. All of these are good things! Its healing! I ran over to see mom on my lunch break to get an update from the hospitalist Dr. Potluri. While I was there mom had nurses repositioning her, wound care on her hip, Dr. Nagpal from Infectious Disease stopped in to just say hi and to see her smile, Respiratory therapy stopped to check on her breathing, xray came to do an abdominal xray, and just as I was leaving physical therapy arrived. The BEST part of the day was seeing the picture posted on Facebook by Dee of mom sitting in a chair. A real chair!! Not a bed chair, medi chair but a real chair! Ill post the picture on caringbridge so you can see mom and her great smile. Mom has had some pain the last few days and has slept a lot! Hopefully a change in the timing of one her medications will help with a unit of blood she was getting this afternoon. She enjoyed spending the day with dad on Sunday and was happy to see her sister again yesterday. Marlene will be with her this week and Dee was there for a visit this afternoon. Keep those positive thoughts and prayers coming moms way! We are all looking forward to mom spending more time in chairs!
