Tuesday, 16 December Morning Prayer The Opening Opening Sentence The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together. Isaiah 40:5 Confession Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbour. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep us in eternal life. Amen. Versicle and Response Lord, open our lips. And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever Amen. Our King and Saviour now draws near: Come let us adore him. Jubilate Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands; serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Know this: The Lord himself is God; he himself has made us, and we are his; we are his people and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving; go into his courts with praise; give thanks to him and call upon his Name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his faithfulness endures from age to age. Antiphon Our King and Saviour now draws near: Come let us adore him. Psalm 45 1My heart is stirring with a noble song; let me recite what I have fashioned for the king;* my tongue shall be the pen of a skilled writer. 2You are the fairest of men;* grace flows from your lips, because God has blessed you for ever. 3Strap your sword upon your thigh, O mighty warrior,* in your pride and in your majesty. 4Ride out and conquer in the cause of truth * and for the sake of justice. 5Your right hand will show you marvellous things; * your arrows are very sharp, O mighty warrior. 6The peoples are falling at your feet,* and the kings enemies are losing heart. 7Your throne, O God, endures for ever and ever,* a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of your kingdom; you love righteousness and hate iniquity. 8Therefore God, your God, has anointed you * with the oil of gladness above your fellows. 9All your garments are fragrant with myrrh, aloes, and cassia,* and the music of strings from ivory palaces makes you glad. 10Kings daughters stand among the ladies of the court;* on your right hand is the queen, adorned with the gold of Ophir. 11Hear, O daughter; consider and listen closely;* forget your people and your fathers house. 12The king will have pleasure in your beauty; * he is your master; therefore do him honour. 13The people of Tyre are here with a gift; * the rich among the people seek your favour. 14All glorious is the princess as she enters; * her gown is cloth-of-gold. 15In embroidered apparel she is brought to the king;* after her the bridesmaids follow in procession. 16With joy and gladness they are brought,* and enter into the palace of the king. 17In place of fathers, O king, you shall have sons;* you shall make them princes over all the earth. 18I will make your name to be remembered from one generation to another;* therefore nations will praise you for ever and ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. Amen. The Old Testament Reading Isaiah 9:1-7 1But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness- on them light has shined.3You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder.4For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.5For all the boots of the tramping warriors and all the garments rolled in blood shall be burned as fuel for the fire.6For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he is named Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. New Testament Reading 2 Peter 1:12-21 12 Therefore I intend to keep on reminding you of these things, though you know them already and are established in the truth that has come to you.13I think it right, as long as I am in this body, to refresh your memory, 14since I know that my death will come soon, as indeed our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15And I will make every effort so that after my departure you may be able at any time to recall these things.16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17For he received honour and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. 18We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain.19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of ones own interpretation. 21because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Luke 22:54-69 54Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priests house. But Peter was following at a distance.55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them.56Then a servant-girl, seeing him in the firelight, stared at him and said, This man also was with him.57But he denied it, saying, Woman, I do not know him. .58A little later someone else, on seeing him, said, You also are one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not!.59Then about an hour later still another kept insisting, Surely this man also was with him; for he is a Galilean.60But Peter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking about! At that moment, while he was still speaking, the cock crowed.61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the cock crows today, you will deny me three times..62And he went out and wept bitterly.63Now the men who were holding Jesus began to mock him and beat him;64they also blindfolded him and kept asking him, Prophesy! Who is it that struck you?.65They kept heaping many other insults on him.66When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council.67They said, If you are the Messiah, tell us. He replied, If I tell you, you will not believe;68and if I question you, you will not answer.69But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Collect of the Day: Advent 3 Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honour and glory, now and for ever. Amen. For Mission O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Collect for Guidance Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Prayer Attributed to St. Francis Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen. Please add your own prayers Benediction Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Romans 15:13 . Isaacs
