Tuesday, 2 September 2014 What would you ask politicians? (Plain English) We have 5 main political parties in the UK. Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Green, UKIP A political party is a group of people that share beliefs. They want to win the election. Winning the election means that party get to decide on the future laws in our country Every year the political parties have a conference. People go to these conferences to talk to the political parties about things that matter to them These are things like crime, or the NHS We had a competition for self advocates to go to a political party conference Lots of people entered. They were all really good. It was very difficult for us to choose just 2 people. We wanted everyone to have the chance to go! We had enough money for 1 person to go to Conservative conference with us and 1 person to go to Labour The winners were Shaun Webster and Vicky Hiles. Shaun works for CHANGE. He is coming to Conservative conference with us Vicky is coming to the Labour conference with us We are all very excited! We have arranged lots of meetings We will meet Esther McVey the Employment Minister at the Conservative conference We hope to meet Mark Harper the Minister for Disabled People at the Conservative conference We will meet lots of people from think tanks A think tank is where lots of people get together to talk about how they think things like social care should work We want to ask them how people with learning disabilities can influence what they think about in their think tanks We will meet Kate Green at Labour conference. She is the Shadow Disability Minister. A Shadow minister works for the opposition The opposition is the party that is not running the government They try to tell the government what they think We will meet Anne McGuire at Labour conference She used to be the Disability Minister when Labour were the government We will meet Liz Kendall at Labour conference She is the shadow minister for care We want to know what you would ask a politician. We will ask them about things like independent living and social care We will ask them about jobs for people with learning disabilities What would you ask them? We can ask some questions for you. You can email Gary to tell him your questions [email protected] You can ask a friend, family member or support worker to help you with this if you want Gary, Shaun, Vicky and Kali will read all your questions. We will try to ask as many of them as possible We will make some videos and write about the conferences afterwards so you can find out the answers
