Tuesday, January 27, 2015 – Pastor Jim Gallagher By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. Hebrews 11:8 Author Steve Maraboli once said, “You are not on a journey to God; you are on a journey WITH God.” It stands to reason then, that every journey must begin with a step of faith. Hebrews 11:8 states, By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. This is a powerful example of the faith of Abraham and the faithfulness of God, the Father. I can only imagine, the doubts and fears Abraham would have had to face as he led his wife and family away from everything they had known. He could not have foreseen the future, that one day the land would be his inheritance. He had only two choices: trust, obey, and take that first step, or remain where he was. It was a conscious choice. Abraham chose to begin his journey of faith. My own journey of faith, which led my family to the Cathedral, began almost five years ago. My wife and I were sitting in a greasy spoon diner late one night with Dr. Bruce Wilkinson. It had been a difficult year for my family. I had lost my job and our home of twenty-five years was in foreclosure. My mother had passed away after battling Alzheimers. Emotionally, I was in a barren wasteland. One evening, by faith, I attended Dr. Wilkinsons class on living the life you were born to live. I would like to say I was suddenly and miraculously filled with all-consuming faith, but I wasnt. However, God hadnt forgotten me and my journey of faith had begun. Over the next few months, I sat in on every class Dr. Wilkinson taught. Soon he asked me to begin teaching about living your dream at a rehab center for battered women. That led to an invitation to come out to California and speak at the Cathedral. As my wife and I left the San Francisco airport and drove toward San Jose, we began to cry. We were home. Over the next year, our five children, my wife and I began the process of moving across the country from Georgia to begin a new life and ministry. Like Abraham, we had no home, no promise of a future, but we had faith and God showered us with His faithfulness. My journey began as a physical move across the country, but in reality in was a spiritual one. We serve a God of the impossible, but with faith and taking the first step all things are possible. Prayer: Father, help me to make the choice to take that first step of faith with the knowledge You are not waiting for me, but that You are beside me. Take away my fear as I begin my own journey of faith. Amen.
