Tuesday July 29th - Continued Challenges By Carol Buzalsky — 20 minutes ago I have to say sometimes my posts dont make sense and now Ive figured out why - When I click spell check it seems to delete words! So Im editing this to put them back in. GRRRRR... Sorry, not sure if I am remembering everything I typed the first time around! Mom was brought down to Interventional radiology to have her feeding tube changed from being in her stomach to be placed in her intestines. Of course one of the complications that can happen, happened with mom and they were not able to place the tube in her intestine as they lost the path. This means she no longer has the stomach feeding tube but does have hole in her belly and into her stomach the hole is smaller than a pencil tip. Typically what happens for patients is that a surgeon will go in and stitch the hole in the stomach to close it up. Well, mom is too weak to have the surgery. So in the meantime, they will continue to monitor the spot and watch for infection and other issues. The reason for making this change in feeding tube placement was due to the fact that her stomach was not fully processing her feedings and she was having high residuals. She desperately needs the nutrition to heal. As mom needs the nutrition a tube was placed through her nose and down into her stomach and into the intestines. This is only a short term fix as they dont typically use this method for long term feeding. We also found out today that her urine and sputum cultures taken a few days ago came back positive for a fungal infection. Of course this too is rare, but has occurred in mom. Additional blood draws were done late this afternoon to be sent off for cultures to check her blood for this as well. Since last Thursday moms antibiotics keep changing each day as these cultures continue to yield results and help guide which medications to give her. Due to the feeding tube procedure today she was sedated late morning and early afternoon and when off sedation she was sleeping most of the time. I was with mom this morning before work and then ended up staying when I stopped to check on her at lunch due to the complications with the procedure. Marlene, her sister was with her all day and DeAnn was there as well for part of the afternoon and evening. Jean and Ralph arrived in Fargo late this afternoon as well to spend some time with mom. My cousin Kim and her daughter arrived tonight in Fargo from Indiana and will spend time with mom tomorrow. Hopefully all the love and positive thoughts will be absorbed by mom to aid in her healing and comfort.
