Tuesday, November 5; Bora Bora, French Polynesia -- We dropped - TopicsExpress

Tuesday, November 5; Bora Bora, French Polynesia -- We dropped anchor in Bora Boras lagoon this morning at about 8:00. The island is still beautiful with a turquoise lagoon and white sand. This is the island where the movie South Pacific was filmed, and it was a Navy supply base in WWII. There are two 7-inch naval guns from a WWI Naval cruiser that were dragged up to the mountains and sighted in to shoot from either direction. These are LARGE guns! They were sighted in and never fired again because the war never got this far. The enemy were stopped at Guadalcanal. Our excursion was in a 4WD Land Rover that took us up to the mountains for fantastic views at about four spots. What a ride! You had to hang on tight; the road was cut in 1942 and hasnt been improved since the seabees cut it with a bulldozer. They werent concerned with looks, just for a way through the jungle. The local guys know how to take you on a 4WD ride that you wont forget! Since we had done it before, in 2008, we had a rollicking good time. But my brother and his wife found the trip scary, to say the least. One of the hills was so steep the driver had to make two tries to get over it. He did. It was almost straight down the other side. Those Land Rovers can sure take a beating! We went to a few other places, but it was really hot and humid on the beach. We were glad we wore our big hats! Then we boarded the tender and went back to the ship where we got some goodies to eat and took a nap! Well post more later -- next stop Moorea!
