Tuesday Sept 16 Here s a Cabo update I just read on another friends page: COMMUNICATIONS The area is still without electricity and water, with only spotty cell service. The electricity was cut prior to the storm to prevent electrocution, and will be out until they can clear out downed power lines. The water was cut due to flooding and risk of contamination. The roads are largely impassable due to debris, downed power lines and trees. The authorities are asking everyone to stay in their homes and not go out. This is making it very difficult for anyone to get information out or get damage assessments. Please be patient, it will come. TOURIST SAFETY The authorities are reporting that there has not been a single casualty of Hurricane Odile reported in Los Cabos, which is of course great news. All reports from hotels report that their guests are safe and sound. It was a traumatic experience of course, but only a handful of injuries and no casualties. The biggest reported issue right now is guests at the Riu Santa Fe, where about 600 tourists are trapped inside by flood waters without much water or food. LOCAL CONDITIONS The villages around Los Cabos took it pretty hard. Thousands of delicate homes were destroyed, and people are looting all the stores to get supplies to feed their families. The roads are largely impassable due to mud slides and downed power lines, so disaster relief is having difficulty to get supplies to them. The state has declared a State of Emergency which releases emergency funds to the area, and mobilizes the Army and Navy for assistance. Remember Los Cabos is a small, remote area, and there are limited resources available, so they are having to be sent in from other areas.
