Tuesday afternoon was a thrilling occasion for the Year 5 and 6 pupils chosen to represent Yarrells at an interschool gala held at Canford School. The name Yarrells was lifted high amongst all those supporting and representing various prep schools, thanks to the outstanding performance by our swimmers. Mr Williams and Mrs Oosthuizen, who attended with the squad, thoroughly enjoyed the exciting afternoon and are very proud of: Tabatha Dodd, Jasmine Fry, Safia Nadaf, Isabelle Milsom, Finlay Green, Eddie Phillips, Max Richards and Ajay Coombes. The boys topped the podium, being placing 1st overall in the boys’ contest, and the Yarrells combined swimming squad of boys and girls finished 2nd overall. It was an impressive debut for us at the Canford School Swimming Gala. Mr Williams, who arranged for the children to participate, is a very happy coach who is delighted with the way our senior swimming squad continues to develop and its increasing success. He reports, ‘After a blisteringly fast opening race, won brilliantly by Finlay Green, we knew our team were in for a very competitive swim gala. Our success continued thereafter with Ajay Coombes winning his individual 50m Breaststroke race on the touch at the wall against a very strong swimmer from West Hill Park. Our battle with West Hill Park continued in the boys 25m Butterfly where Finlay Green and Max Richards swam extremely well to finish second and third respectively to a very quick swimmer. We didnt have to wait long for another win, after Ajay Coombes swam like a torpedo with a near technically and tactically perfect race to beat the swimmer from West Hill Park. In the following races we took 2nd and 3rds and the last race was well worth the wait, as the boys relay team dominated the freestyle relay and won by an impressive 4 seconds to their closest rivals Dumpton. The girls performed wonderfully well and if there were an award for a high level of technically accurate swimming they would have won it hands down. The Yarrells girls came up against the strongest squads of Year 5/6 girls that I have seen at a gala for a good three years. They represented Yarrells extremely well and showed what determined athletes they are, even during the toughest of tests.’
