Tuesday at 6:30pm the common council will be going over the report MPD has offered on the price of wearable police cameras. They will meet in 201. Supposedly, the amount they’re suggesting these cameras will cost is incredibly inflated. If that is true, my guess is it’s on purpose to scare both council members and to turn out an opposition for spending more $ on police equipment. When camera footage is available, there can be no discrediting of witnesses and it is no longer a police vs civilian story kind of game. All Scott Resnick was asking for is what our is essentially asking for: a pilot program and thoughtful, community supported policy that takes into account the many concerns of stakeholders through this county. As it turns out, MPD could perhaps doing this without spending much on anything besides community forums to build policy and storage for footage. SWAT has 20 wearable cameras already for which they already have policy and they use them very little. (It would be awfully interesting to see what policy they have now and how involved the council and community has been it’s creation.) It’s unclear what is stoping MPD from taking 10 of the cameras already in their possession and once the policy is created, use them for a pilot. Please attend session to show your support.
