Tulwar Sword, late 18th-19th century A very fine enamelled Tulwar - TopicsExpress

Tulwar Sword, late 18th-19th century A very fine enamelled Tulwar sword from India, probably Lucknow; with a solid Silver hilt, finely decorated with champlevé translucent and opaque enamels in blue, turquoise, green, and red. The hilt is solid silver, and the pommel unscrews to reveal a hidden compartment used for storing opium or precious stones. When dismantled it also gives a good opportunity to examine the quality of silver used in manufacture, and can be seen to be high-grade. The blade is forged from super quality Pattern Welded Damascus, polished to a mirror finish but still showing the Damascus pattern. A very sharp cutting edge, and a false edge on the spine of the blade. The upper spine is marked with an armoury marking from an Indian armoury. The blade is very flexible, probably designed for cavalry use for a powerful and wealthy man.
