At a time most countries are reducing dependence on the polluting fuel, the Energy Ministry plans to boost power from local coal to about 20 percent by 2020 from 14 percent now. In recent years Turkey has increased its revenue base through consumption taxes, such as the fuel tax, which are relatively easy to enforce. The country’s gasoline tax is one of the highest in the world. Average daily income is $29 and it takes 29 percent of a day’s wages to buy a gallon of gas.
