Turkish Outrage Over Bhutanese Plans to Demolish Atatürks Tomb To Make Way for Buddhist Stupa (Bangkok Times) Ankara: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, is being revered in a personality cult by most of the Turkish people for successfully defeating Turkeys enemies during the War of Independence after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and for reforming his country by implementing policies that led to the secularization and modernization of Turkish society. But with the ever-escalating conflict in neighboring Syria and Iraq, a grave threat to Atatürks god-like status, to his final resting place and to the entire country is now looming on the horizon. According to various Turkish secular Kemalist politicians and commentators, this threat posed by the Kingdom of Bhutan and the Islamic State is more dangerous to Turkeys existence and secular identity than President Recep Tayyip Erdogans creeping Islamization or the relentless Armenian claims of genocide.
