Turning $300 into $796,000 by Bill Stack Recently was asked to sign the Form 990 tax return (due Nov 15) for the Lifeway Center Inc, a local non-profit ministry that provides monthly food assistance, health screenings, and hygiene items via the Shepherds Nook Food Pantry, emergency grocery and utility assistance via Helping Hands, and cancer support and travel vouchers for patients via the Project Win cancer support group. Due to the graciousness and generosity of the 35+ volunteer staff members, and the many individuals, churches, businesses and organizations that donate funds, expertise, and resources, the community impact of this ministry has continued to grow. To be honest, I can only stand back and marvel at the faithfulness of God. As the demand for services has grown, many have stepped up to the plate to help make it all possible. We never dreamed when we started in 2001 with a $300/month committment, a rented facility and a handful of willing volunteers, that this would one day turn into a $796,000/year operation, with over $500,000 of assets (including building/equip etc), serving over 1500 vulnerable residents each month, while paying no salaries or benefits to staff or directors, and only $ 903 of administration expenses. This information can be viewed in detail on the website lifewaycenter, or by going to the state of Missouri Attorney Generals Check-A-Charity website, at the link below: ago.mo.gov/cgi-bin/charity/orgDetail.cgi?ID=3863 By the way, if you are considering some end-of-the-year giving, we still have Missouri state tax-credits available, and will put your funds to work right here in the local community, to help the less fortunate among us.
