Turns out theres no such thing as a free lunch. There IS a very real cost. Critics of this program will say its paid by the taxpayer. But in a city where 74 percent of kids are eligible even before this program goes into effect (more when considered that the reason for the program is to feed kids who ARE eligible but dont enroll for various reasons), it should be plain to those critics by the overwhelming nature of the evidence that its our community - not its excessively high population of poor - that s doing something wrong. The real cost of a free lunch is not the expense in dollars. The real expense is the the energy spent by those critics in finding blame with the poor or with the government; so much time that they forget to consider the mounting personal cost - and the heavy toll on us all - of their own shameful thoughts and words.
