Twelve years ago, the United States redirected its foreign policy away from grand strategy and toward rooting out and destroying the al Qaeda terrorists who struck the United States on September 11, 2001 (and other Islamists) . On October 30, 2008, soon-to-be President Barack Obama said, "We are 5 days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America." Today the United States has not returned to traditional grand strategy and is positioning itself against a nation trying to stave off those same terrorists. Is this really the fundamental transformation that Obama voters wanted?
