Twenty-seven years ago this month, I was living in Mali, West Africa with a Malian family. During that time, there was a wildly popular President in the neighboring country of Burkina Faso. His name was Thomas Sankara and he has since become known as the Che Guevera of Africa. He was a fierce advocate for Womens Rights and for African Independence from colonial European powers. On October 15, 1987 he was assassinated at the age of 37....likely with French complicity. The entire region was devastated as Blaise Compaore took over as President....typical African despot leader. Today that man resigned his position because the entire country had had enough. And the ideas of Sankara are alive all over Africa....the old saying is true...you can kill a man, but you cant kill the ideals. Great day for the people of West Africa!
