Twenty years ago I wrote the following article that was printed in the Newark Star Ledger, I have traveled all over the U.S., Australia, India etc. There are two billion Christians in this world. Christianity to me is more of a way of life than merely a way of worship. If we look at Christianity as a way of life, I have met only two, true Christians. I walked up to true Christian Rev. Martin Luther King in Toots Shurs Restaurant in N.Y.C., shook his hand and told him how proud I was of what he was doing for millions of blacks. I did the exact same thing at a bridge ceremony in Calcutta, India and shook the hand of the other true Christian, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Yes, that is an odd name for a Christian, but then we live in a strange world. George Washington killed thousands of British soldiers and thousands of American Revolutionary War soldiers were killed in order to win our independence from England. Gandhi won independence for India from England rule WITHOUT FIRING ONE BULLET. Gandhi employed his nonviolence methods in South Africa and India. He was imprisoned in both countries many times. He came back to India from South Africa in l9l5. He led many nonviolent demonstrations, went on hunger strikes and almost starved himself to death a few times. He was in and out of prison and often was put on house arrest where he could not leave his home for even a second. England finally caved in and gave India its independence in l947. Mahatma (great soul) Gandhi was born Oct. 2, l869. Jan. 30, l948, Mahatma Gandhi, who all his life believed in nonviolence, was violently shot in the chest three times and killed by a crazed Hindu assassin. This was the way Gandhi wanted to die. Gandhi often said that he knew he would have to die and if he had a choice, he would like to be assassinated so that he would die as a martyr to his people. Gandhi did not have to be assassinated to be remembered by his people. Mohandas Gandhi will be remembered by his people even thousands of years from now, even millions of years from now as the great soul of India, as Babu (father) of his people. God bless us all, especially bless Rev. Martin Luther King and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, two true Christians.
