Twenty years ago this month I landed in Nova Scotia. And in less than a week I was introduced to a new client, someone who was reluctant to edit with me at first (as he knew nothing about me). But soon we embarked on a 20 year relationship. Within one week of working together he took me under his wing, bringing me around to meet others in the city and in our industry. It was in his nature to help anyone he could and he helped me gain my footing here is short order. He was the first to show me that Nova Scotia was a place full of warm and friendly people that I should permanently call my home. The best part of every project was the two of us going to lunch and chatting up a storm. We talked about his past work at the CBC for Land & Sea and his dreams of future, grand projects. I shared with him my dream of starting a company which he counselled and strongly encouraged. We worked for almost three years together on a single documentary - I think his professional climax. There were numerous dinners together at his farm with his girlfriend, Rubia. One day he made a special trip to stop into my suite one day to show off the ring on her hand. In fact my second date with Cathy was taking her to their wedding in New Ross; a candlelit affair in a small church. It seemed like the whole town come out in celebration. The four of us together for more visits, Christmas tree cuttings, romps through the woods, and Ross Farm tours (a museum he was heavily involved with). Always a smile, always so happy to see us and spend time. For a short while they had to move to Ontario to be with his mother until she passed, but then they promptly returned to the community they cherished. For the last decade they both have spent inordinate amounts of time contributing to their local community. The result was a Governor’s General award which he so richly deserved. I’ve felt the pain from loss of family before but yesterday is the first time I ever lost a friend. Bob, I miss you so very much. Rest in peace Robert Hutt.
