Twenty years ago this week began one of the worst periods of humankind’s short history, a genocide in the African country of Rwanda which resulted in the killing of up to one million people. A conflict that had started as a civil war ended with the slaughter of defenceless civilians and was followed by a massive exodus of refugees. It was a shameful period in which the world largely stood by during the killing and aid agencies then struggled in appalling circumstances to help those affected. The DEC launched an appeal which raised over £37 million (over £62 million in today’s money) which our member agencies used as best they could to help all those in need.
