Capt.Jay Markella and Officer Robert Anderson were placed on leave July 17, according to a letter ent to the two men by Police Chief Neil Dryfe. In the letter, Dryfe says the town has retained an outside attorney to conduct an administrative investigation into the allegations and that the matter has also been referred to the chief state’s attorney. “The allegations against you are serious,” Dryfe says in the letter. “I am making this decision because I believe it is in the best interests of the Cheshire Police Department and the town of Cheshire.” Dryfe said both men will be interviewed as part of the administrative investigation and “if you refuse to answer the questions or provide false or intentionally incomplete information, you will be subject to disciplinary action up to and including termination.” Dryfe declined to comment on further details of the allegations surrounding the case. But sources told the Register Tuesday night that as much as $100,000 either is missing or is unaccounted for by receipts. Markella declined comment on the investigation, but said he has retained the services of an attorney. Markella served as the union’s treasurer from 2005 to 2010, when he was promoted to captain and became head of the detective bureau. Before being promoted to captain, Markella served as the department’s spokesman and became the face of the department in the aftermath of the July 2007 home invasion and triple-murder of the Petit family. Anderson could not be reached for comment. He served as the union’s president between 2005 and 2009. After stepping down as president of the union at the start of 2009, Anderson was accused in April of that year of charging $119 on his ex-wife’s credit card to subscribe to a dating website, but those charges were later dropped.
