Two Smyth County Schools on Modified Lockdown The following message is from Smyth County Schools Superintendent Mike Robinson: From Smyth Co. School Board Website.......I am sending this alert to let you know that we have done a modified lockdown at two schools as a precaution. An unidentified person in a vehicle with out-of-state tags pulled up outside of Atkins Elementary School this morning. When the principal approached the man, he fled and the principal contacted law enforcement to make them aware. The vehicle was later found near Oak Point Elementary School with no one in the vehicle. A person was observed walking toward the wooded area near OPES and law enforcement was contacted. Oak Point Elementary School and the Smyth Career & Technology Center were placed on a modified lockdown. In addition, we asked all schools along the interstate corridor to take additional precautions to make sure their school was safe. Your children are safe at school and there is no need to pick them up. We have implemented these safety measures as a precaution.
