Two Talladega county fire departments receive $850,000 in grants Grants totaling almost $850,000 have been approved for new firefighting vehicles for two Talladega County fire departments through the 2013 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers announced. Childersburg Fire and Rescue Department should receive a $617,500 grant for a ladder truck, and the Lay Lake Volunteer Fire Department should receive a $231,325 grant through the federal program which supports first responders across Alabama and the nation, Everyone is excited here, Childersburg acting fire chief Tim Shelnutt said. A ladder truck will help our ISO rating, which is great for our residents. Childersburg Fire Department Capt. Jeff Monroe said having a ladder truck should reduce the citys ISO rating by one point, which could result in lower insurance rates for residents. A ladder truck is very helpful to have, Shelnutt said. There are so many things you can do with these trucks. They provide an elevated stream of water, so you can get the water where you need it such as the roof of a house. It is also easier to go up and down it for rescues or multi-story structure fires. Shelnutt said the city could not afford a ladder truck without the grant. ANNISTON STAR
