Two cheers for two major decisions unanimoualy taken in Food & Supply ministers conference convened by the FM Arun Jaitely at Delhi.1)Amendment of Essential Commodities Act with inclusion of potato and onion in the list of essential commodities.It will empower govt to take action against hoarders who often create artificial crisis by hoarding commodities beyond prescribed period.2)Effecting amendment in Agricutural Produce Marketing Committies Act to exclude potato & onion from the list of produce.It will enable farmers to have freedom to sell direct to consumers.These bold measures if administered effectively can control price rise to a large extent.Both the Centre & State should realise that food inflation has set market on fire.Potato fear and Onion tears have become constant companions of the consumers.There is another piece of good decision to raise export prices of both potato & onion by Rs450 & Rs500 respectively.It will further enhance additional availability & ease supply pressure.Another initiative which demands immediate attention is expansion & consolidation of storage facilities to ensure sustainability of these two perishable items.Its urgency should not be wished away.We hope efforts will bear fruits and bring welcome relief to the people.
