Two container ships passing through Egypt’s Suez Canal collided - TopicsExpress

Two container ships passing through Egypt’s Suez Canal collided near the northern opening of the waterway, (Port Said) officials said on Monday. The two vessels — the German-flagged MV Colombo Express (right) and the Singaporean-flagged MV Maersk Ttanjong (left) — collided when the Colombo Express appears to veer left suddenly during an apparent attempt to overtake the Maersk Tanjong. --Brings back memories. I was working on the Norwegian tanker Gilda in February,1959 when we collided with an American tanker almost the same way; though our ships were considerably smaller (ours was 17,000 tons deadweight and the other 19,000 TDW) and the tanks were empty. We were just backing up in Suez ( the other side of the canal at the Red Sea port, entering the canal) yet; the front bow top curled up like a sardine can being opened; right up to the anchor works; and the ship rolled back and forth for a while (ya should have seen the other guy!). They patched up, temporary; and we managed to get through the Suez and back to Liverpool; where we went into dry-dock for repairs. There I signed off and went home. It was the end of my sailors life; but alas! The next year (1960) I was off to Canada to raise hell there. Still here; not too much hell raising anymore. :-) https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10152775112049257&set=a.88419354256.99216.660594256&type=1
