Two days ago NGSC sadly lost one of its most colorful characters. Mr Kifoto Vakatau, fondly known as Kifi, one of only two life members of the club and well known for his jokes when you greet and shake his hand. Kifi gets around the course in his little Suzuki pick up, a real head turner of a vehicle mostly because of the extra passengers he always brings along with him to golf. If any of the lads are having a miserable game of golf, a joke about Kifis lovely passengers, will always brighten up the mood. Every golfer has their own unique dress style, like Greg Norman and his cowboy hat, John Daly with his outrageous colors, Kifi also had his favorite golf attire, a distinctive headwear often referred to on Niue as Grandmas church hat..! Kifi is a true NGSC man, always keen to join in whatever activity the club has organized. A couple of years ago he turned up to a golf event in a ladies nightgown and his grandmas church hat. He won the best dressed prize for the day. If there was a NGSC function be sure Kifi will be there with his glass of red wine. Being the only wine drinker, NGSC stocks red wine especially for Kifi, who always adds color to conversations due to his unique understanding and well honed personal views on politics, local happenings and current affairs. He was much like the late Joan Rivers, if there a scandal or piece of local gossip, Kifi will know about it first. Kifi was a smart and very resourceful golfer who marks his ball with huge letters KIFI and knows all the tricks in the book in the art of gamesmanship and the dos and donts of golf, and will take you to school if youve just picked up a club. Kifi is also a the current Junior Division Champion having faced his son Ikivale in the 2013 final for the NGSC Junior Division Championship. Golfers love to be partnered with Kifi so they can have a relaxed day riding on the back of his truck to the next tee - well that is the main reason they say why they all love playing in Kifis group. Kifi also loves to practice his golf, judging by the dozens of balls marked KIFI strewn all over the golf course. No doubt we will be finding many more in the coming weeks - only this time they will not be ignored but picked up and put in the bag next to the hole-in-one ball as a reminder of this colorful character and as a part of the fine history of the NGSC. RIP and monuina e fenoga haau ma kapitiga ko Kifi.
