Two nights ago, around 5 a.m., my household was victimized by what then seemed trivial and kind of funny, but now I will refer to as a hate crime. A drunk and disorderly woman repeatedly screamed nigger and faggot outside our home and set about breaking through our screen door, setting our garden on fire, throwing the neighbors Halloween pumpkin at our porch, and trying to assault myself and our guests when we came outside. While the cops were finally called, her instant change in behavior allowed her to avoid detainment. I am now full of regret because I conceded this confrontation and left the house before the cops came, to get some sleep (granted, it WAS 5 am). I was presented an opportunity to have a direct impact on the discrimination in our city (I had video of the event, which possibly could have led to an arrest), but I let it pass. Anyone who knows me, knows that Im fundamentally a pacifist. But that will be the last time I turn the other cheek and respond with passivity. There is stil a very real problem out here, and Ill be damned if Ill let any more discriminatory disrespect go unchallenged in my presence. /endrant
