Two performance day - today at 2pm and 7pm! Each performance of The Brundibar Project will conclude with an optional discussion with the cast and crew facilitated by a scholar from the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College. This afternoons facilitator is: Nona Fienberg, Cohen Center Fellow Nona Fienberg served for nine years as Dean of Arts and Humanities at Keene State College. Since 1991, she has been Professor of English at Keene State College, serving for eight years as Department Chair. Now a Professor in the department of Holocaust and Genocide Studies, she works with the faculty team at Keene State College that offers the only undergraduate major in Holocaust and Genocide Studies in the U.S. She teaches, presents, and publishes in Shakespeare, Holocaust Studies, Early Modern Women Writers, pedagogy, and issues in higher education. This evenings facilitator is: Deb Barry, Cohen Center Fellow Deborah Barry is a Fellow at The Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College. Deb taught high school English for more than 20 years. She was also involved in directing and producing theatrical productions with students along with extensive work in awareness and diversity with students and faculty. Deb founded a student performance group, Voices, which utilized theatre, dance, and music to raise awareness about adolescent social issues. As producer of her schools annual Awareness Day, Deb found her passion for providing opportunities for people to become more fully aware of and move toward understanding of issues in the world around us and, especially, the people in our world. This passion led to her founding a NH non-profit organization, Awareness UNlimited, whose mission is to facilitate awareness and diversity progamming with schools, business, civic groups/organizations, and communities, fostering understanding and respect, opening minds and opening worlds. Holocaust and genocide studies have been an important piece of Debs awareness work. Through her affiliation with The Cohen Center and meeting many remarkable survivors, Deb has become committed to never forgetting. Deb had the privilege of assisting survivor Thomas Weisshaus in writing his memoir, Not a Victim: Tales of Survival in Nazi Budapest which was published in 2009. There will also be a special guest at the evening performance: Dr.Katrina Lantos Swett is the daughter of two Hungarian Holocaust survivors. Her father, the late Congressman Tom Lantos, was the only Holocaust survivor ever elected to the US Congress where he served for nearly 30 years. Sadly, in 2008, he passed away in office while he was serving as Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. He was rescued by Raoul Wallenberg during the war. Tom and Annette Lantos were solely responsible for making Raoul Wallenberg an honorary American citizen whose bust is in the US Capitol. They also co-founded the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, which has been renamed the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission. Her mother, Annette Lantos, worked by his side every day he was in Congress. They shared a passion for educating the young about the Holocaust and genocide prevention. Their compelling stories are well-known around the world, and Representative Lantos was featured in Steven Spielberg’s documentary, The Last Days, which is a book based on the film, published by his Shoah Foundation. Growing up with these two remarkable people, Katrina has a unique perspective about the Holocaust and about how her parents came to this country penniless and began new lives teaching and devoting themselves to public service, committed to fighting genocide where ever it exists around the world.
