Two photos from 1962 taken on Dartford Heath in the area called Heathside which is situated along Leyton Cross Road opposite the Horse and Groom Pub. Notice how much less wooded and more open heathland it was then. Now the houses and pub in the background are totally obscured by trees and shrubs. The first pic is of my older brother Mark, younger brother Adrian and younger sister Karen, showing the Horse and Groom Pub in the background. The Horse and Groom Pub was built in the mid 1800’s and a picturesque cottage that stood beside it to the right was sacrificed to make way for the car park. The old cottage on the other side ( Molly’s sweetshop) has also succumbed to the same fate having recently been demolished. Apparently the pub used to be known locally as the ‘kicking donkey’ years ago probably because donkeys used to graze on the heath. It was also one of the jug and bottle pubs, where people could go with their jugs and get them filled up to take home probably the forerunner of the Off License. The other pic is of Mark and Adrian with the houses in Leyton Cross Road just along from the Pub in the background. The third pic is of an old photo of the Horse and Groom Pub and cottage c.1925 which was posted previously (25 June) on JWR by Greg Phillips.
