Two things needs to change in the criminal justice system, mandatory sentences and the three strike law. The courts are busy and plea bargains put people in prison who should not be there. The prisons are full of poor people that cannot afford attorneys who could negotiate their freedom. Public defenders are under paid and under staffed. We could reduce the cost of imprisonment by funding the public defenders office adequately enough to properly defend everyone they serve. I’m not advocating that no one should be jailed, but some crimes does not warrant automatic 10 years behind bars. Most third strike crimes do not deserve life in prison. I also think it should be against the law to reduce someone’s sentence if they snitch. Some of our police officers can’t be trusted to handle this properly, they hold this over the head of the felon forever and could get them killed. Our prison system needs to get into the business of rehabilitation and education. Our jails today are full of repeaters, and nothing is being done to change that. Prisons for profit are not helping either, it’s against their business plan to rehabilitate. Too many people are in prison today who should not be there. Just saying.
