Two thoughts for the day: 1. For the first time at this years PSP World Cup, PBA brought us fantasy paintball, where you had a $25,000 budget to put together an 8-man roster. Points were earned by totalling stats like kills, points alive, and penalties. Someone mentioned they had no idea anyone even kept up with all those stats. Another person wondered how you could rank sceanrio players (Number of Facebook friends? YouTube likes? *tongue in cheek*). Its not hard to imagine keeping up with scenario stats, actually. Put a statistcian in each base and track things like missions assigned, missions completed, mission assists. You couldnt really keep up with kills, but then those dont matter anyways. The point is, it could be done. The real question is, SHOULD it be done? 2, My buddy Ross Kortgardner shares super cool videos of airsoft ops with me. Most of yall are paintballers and youre all entitled to your opinions, but the fact is airsoft is successful AND it it pulls a ton of young players away from scenario paintball. Like it or not, scenarios best answer to airsoft is MagFed. As MagFed markers get more-and-more realistic and perform better-and-better (examples: the MilSig Paradigm Pro, Scarab Arms TGR1 & 2, and RAP4 468), its now possible to say that MagFed technology may even be a better simulation than airsoft (20-round paintball mags vs. HiCap airsoft mags). But, as the video below demonstrates, while paintball has moved away from true scenario towards big game format, airsoft continues to dream big and show no fear about pushing limits (When was the last time you did a Zodiac landing in paintball?). I believe, to be truly successful, MagFed should define itself more like airsoft and less like scenario paintball. Thats the best chance it has to build a player base from both airsoft and paintball. If MagFed games are modeled more like airsoft ops, the coolness factor allone dictates a paradigm shift in scenario paintball. The question is, will game producers try to run MagFed games just like other scenario games, or will they give players the MilSim-style games they want? youtu.be/pYdaL9w9Rq4
