Two weeks ago, I walked into a pool, to begin water aerobics at the suggestion of Nancy Keith Witt, to prepare my body for hip replacement surgery in September. I had to use my cane in the water for support. The next day, I left my cane at home. Ive gone 10 times, walking against the strong current in a special area, in order to build up weak muscles that had atrophied due to an injury. Sometimes it feels like Im walking through thick mud, as I strengthen my leg muscles. I use water weights everyday to make the workout more intense, and have attended 3 water aerobics classes, learning how to use the water to build muscle. My sessions last from an hour to 2 and a half hours like I did today. I am also using an ijoy board for 30 minutes each day, as it wiggles and moves my torso, working on building my core and improving my balance. A few days ago, Rob Purser, posted a planking challenge. I didnt know if I could make a commitment for the challenge, but I would do what I could and plank as much as I can. I planked for 20 seconds for two days, then yesterday, progressed to 30 seconds, plus did an extra 10 last night. Today, I did another 30 seconds, and decided to do an additional 30 after returning from the pool today. Planking is very difficult!! :-( As much as Id like to avoid surgery, I dont think thats possible since Im bone on bone.....but I will now go into surgery with my body in better shape than its been in years! Im down 8.5 pounds from my last doctors visit a few weeks ago, and I feel strength returning to my body and core. A special thank you to Nancy for loving me and caring enough to make a suggestion to help me build up my muscles. I would never have thought of the benefit of water, if she hadnt enlightened me! Nancy is a physical therapist and cranial sacral therapist. A thank you to Shannon Brotherton Smith and Dr. Max Norris, DC, Dipl, Ac for sharing their ijoy board, and for Max as he has worked hard attempting to keep my hip and back balanced. Thank you to Rob for making the planking challenge, that many have joined! Thanks to my cardiologist for the time released nitroglycerin that enables my heart to withstand the intense workout Im doing without causing chest pain! And a thank you to Judy Potter-Modglin and Jenn Jenn Fiddyment who are my water workout buddies who decided to join me on this adventure! :-)
