Two well-groomed men knocked on our door one Saturday afternoon - TopicsExpress

Two well-groomed men knocked on our door one Saturday afternoon wearing nothing but smiles and bags. They were #JehovahsWitnesses. Dad was at work, mom was home. Fast forward to three/four months: Mom declared with easy confidence and joy that she may be close to discovering the truth. I didnt know exactly what she meant at the time. The entire family, save my dad, became regulars at the Kingdom Hall every Saturday and Sunday from there on. Dad seemed impressed but not convinced. I think he just enjoyed the elaborate discussions. He was a casual Catholic. Although I was quite young, I was given tasks that included standing beside the pulpit and reading and explaining portions of scriptures to the congregation. I was evaluated after every session and given marks. I was taught bible truths and how to witness to other people. I memorized many relevant verses from the bible and became quite good at it. All, including the aged and the very young, were taught how to read and write in the local language. The Witnesses were exceptionally timely and organized. Yearly(?) District Conventions would be planned way ahead with all logistics figured out. They were a dedicated bunch. They emphasized scriptural exegesis and critical thinking (tools that Id build on and later use in evaluating the truths). Although I ceased being a witness years ago for obvious reasons, I still cherish the experience profoundly.
