Two years ago, when the Nirbhaya case happened, I went to Jantar - TopicsExpress

Two years ago, when the Nirbhaya case happened, I went to Jantar Mantar with my schoolmates, and protested. We had written We want justice on huge white placards, and screamed at the top of our lungs. But did we really want justice? If yes, then where were we when so many people got raped, abused, molested during these two years? Ill tell you why I went to Jantar Mantar two years ago. I went because everyone else was going. I went because I thought it was the new cool. I even got my friend to click pictures of me. I was screaming, We want justice at the top of my voice. If anyone had asked me what was my definition of justice, I would have simply shrugged, and said, Death sentence for the rapists. Why? Because everyone was saying that. Yes, we got what we wanted. But why was that only time when we were so desperate for justice? I dont know, neither do I want to know. But if theres something that I have realized in these two years, it is that candle marches dont make any difference. Our mentality does. And death sentence for the criminals is not the same as justice. When someone considers committing suicide, we say that they are just trying to escape. They want to escape because they are scared of life. If that is true, then what good are we doing by offering the criminals that escape? The true punishment would have been to let out those people in public with the word RAPIST tattooed on their forehead. In these two years, I have realized that one shouldnt do something because everyone is doing it. In these two years, I have grown up a bit. Because, everyone grows.
