Types of Keratin Treatments Keratin Treatments with Formaldehyde Many salons advertise this procedure as a natural alternative to chemical relaxers because it doesn’t contain lye or many of the other chemicals typically found in straighteners. However, it’s not always true that keratin treatments are 100 percent natural, so it’s important to do your research. Many treatments contain formaldehyde, a chemical thought to cause cancer by various different health organizations. When keratin treatments with formaldehyde are applied, fumes are released that may cause harm not just to the customer, but also to the stylist and others in the vicinity, according to Dr. Ellen Marmur, a dermatologist at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York during a 2007 interview on The Early Show. Plus, the person getting the treatment may be at risk of harm during the months after the treatment, when the chemical breaks down, she noted. Authorities in Brazil, where this controversial treatment originated, have attributed one death to the procedure, according to The Early Show report. Keratin Treatments without Formaldehyde Keratin treatments without formaldehyde promise a much gentler, chemical-free approach to equally beautiful hair. This procedure uses two types of keratin, human hair keratin and botanical keratin. The idea is that the human keratin molecules penetrate the hair cuticle, while the larger, botanical keratin molecules coat the cuticle, so that hair is saturated with keratin both inside and out, explain Raleigh’s Alter Ego Salon on its website. These treatments are applied much like the formaldehyde-containing treatments, except the stylist might not wear a mask.
