Typhoon Yolanda, A Year later: U.S. Embassy Manila Supports Filipino Resilience On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Yolanda (internationally named Haiyan) hit the island of Samar as the strongest recorded typhoon to ever make landfall. The typhoon traversed the island of Leyte and four more islands before exiting the Philippines, demolishing most of the public infrastructure in its path. As of April 2014, the typhoon had caused more than 6,300 deaths and affected a total of 16 million people. The GPH estimates that recovery will cost an estimated $8.1 billion. USG support is estimated at nearly $143 million to help the people of the Philippines respond to, and recover from, the devastating effects of Typhoon Yolanda. Within 36 hours after the storm, the U.S. military began working with the Armed Forces of the Philippines to deliver lifesaving emergency assistance to millions of Filipinos. Relief efforts included more than 13,400 military personnel, 66 aircraft and 12 naval vessels. The United States delivered more than 2,495 tons of relief supplies and evacuated over 21,000 people. More than 1,300 flights were completed in support of the relief efforts for Operation Damayan. The USG, through USAID, is continuing to work closely with the GPH, the private sector, local communities, and civil society to help rebuild the typhoon-affected region by building 1,000 sari-sari stores, constructing more than 200 classrooms and 10 health facilities and building public markets, boat landings, trading centers, and warehouses to support farmers and fisherfolk. https://youtube/watch?v=x4HchYeQR-s
