Typically, unpaid interns cite work experience and connections as the main reasons why they choose to perform painstaking tasks without getting any money. Of course, this ever-growing system of getting paid in anything but dollars benefits the affluent, the comfortable, the upper middle class, or whatever other title that is ascribed to Americas elite. Those of us that come from low income backgrounds naturally cringe at the idea of dedicating 10, 20, even 30 or 40 hours a week to a job that wont help pay for lunch or train fares. But, like always, we do what we gotta do. But sometimes its hard to ask a 20-something year old to perform at the best of her or his ability when s/he knows s/he wont be able to help mom pay the rent, even if she doesnt ask for it. Essentially, it takes an all inclusive, professional, and welcoming company or organization to attract low income interns with the promise of $0. At the very least, the duties performed at the internship must give off a sense of dire importance, something that incredibly matters to the intern or/and will pay off dividends in the years to come. In These Times proved to be all of the above. I want to thank all the staff at 2040 N. Milwaukee, including the writers and Jorge, the janitor, for an amazing experience that will hopefully become my second step (TSL being my first) in the world of journalism. I also want to thank my co-interns for making my experience so much more enjoyable. Regardless of whether journalism lies in my future or not, interning at ITT has been a learning experience beyond any other. I will truly remember these last 10 weeks with as much warmth as the summer that accompanied it.
