U.K. bookmaker Ladbrokes LAD.LN -2.09%, which has been accepting bets on the Nobel for literature for more than a decade, has five-to-one odds on Japan’s Haruki Murakami, compared with twelve-to-one on America’s Joyce Carol Oates. Mr. Murakami and Ms. Oates are perennial favorites. It isn’t even clear when the winner will be named. The laurels start descending next week, beginning with the Nobel in physiology or medicine likely coming on Monday. The literature prize usually is announced on Thursday of the awards week. – The Wall Street Journal
