U.S. Embassy Tokyo - Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens: Super Typhoon Vongfong October 10, 2014 The U.S. Embassy alerts U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Japan that the Joint Typhoon Warning Center and the Japan Meteorological Agency have issued alerts for Super Typhoon Vongfang, which as of 2:00 AM local time on Friday, October 10 is located approximately 300 miles south of Okinawa. The Kadena Weather Authority at the U.S. Air Force’s Kadena Air Base on Okinawa is in Tropical Cyclone Condition of Readiness (TCCOR) 3, but expects to move to TCCOR 1 late Friday or early Saturday. If Super Typhoon Vongfang continues as forecast, damaging winds of 50 knots (57 mph) or greater are anticipated to occur from mid-day Saturday, October 11, through the morning of Sunday, October 12. The strongest winds on Okinawa are expected to be sustained at 75 knots (86 mph), with gusts to 100 knots (115mph).
