U.S Embassy celebrates July 4th On July 3, 2014, Chargé d Affaires Elizabeth Martinez, and her husband, Donald Polhman, welcomed over three hundred guests to the Embassy’s grand Atrium to celebrate the 238th Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America. Guests included Chief Justice Zalia McCalla, Speaker of the House, Michael Peart, Minister of National Security, Peter Bunting, Minister of Justice, Marck Golding, members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps, members of the clergy, and a host of other Jamaican officials. Draped in the traditional red, white and blue, the atrium came alive as the celebrations commenced with the ‘Marching of the Colors’ by the United States Marine Corps, followed by the singing of the national anthems of Jamaica and the United States and speeches delivered by both Ms. Martinez and Minister Bunting. Today’s celebration also marked the unveiling of the mural, ‘Folded Sky, Homage to Colin Powell’. This conceptual rendering by renowned artist Dorothea Rockburne, is in honor of Former Secretary of State, General Colin Powell and his family, highlighting the mutual ties shared between the nations of Jamaica and the United States. The mural depicts the sky at the time of General Powell’s birth. Guests were later feted to delicious traditional American foods and serenaded by the two-member band, Warm and Easy.
