U.S. Retail Sales Ease in 1st 3 Weeks of January From December -- Redbook National chain-store sales fell 0.1% in the first three weeks of January from the comparable week in December, according to Redbook Researchs latest indicator, released Tuesday. The indexs decrease compared with a target for growth of 0.2%. The Johnson Redbook Sales Index also showed seasonally adjusted sales for the period improved 3.1% from a year earlier, compared with a target for an increase of 3.4%. For the third week of January, sales rose 3.2% from a year earlier. Redbook noted the extended Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend helped to drive sales. A focus on clearance and reshaping inventories contributed to continued sporadic activity during the third week of January.
