U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, joins scholars and other politicians at the special presentation entitled Heritage in Peril: Iraq and Syria, hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This special presentation, which coincided with the opening of the Museums new exhibit, Assyria to Iberia, emphasized the tragic destruction of the cultural heritage of Iraq and Syria. From looting and selling artifacts stolen from the regions museums and excavation sites, with a total estimated value of $2.2 billion (UNESCO), to the purposeful destruction of artifacts and historical sites in order to wipe clean the memory of the region and undermine the regions legacy of religious and ethnic diversity; the fabric of modern civilization. Secretary Kerry asserted that these atrocities against the cultural heritage of Iraq and Syria, are not just a killing of human life, which the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is guilty of perpetrating in massive proportions, but more so constitutes the killing of the very soul of the people of the region. #DemandForAction #SafeHavenNow
