U.S. to Restore Full Relations With Cuba, Erasing a Last Trace of Cold War Hostility. President Obama on Wednesday ordered the restoration of full diplomatic relations with Cuba and the opening of an embassy in Havana for the first time in more than a half-century as he vowed to “cut loose the shackles of the past” and sweep aside one of the last vestiges of the Cold War. “These 50 years have shown that isolation has not worked,” Mr. Obama said. “It’s time for a new approach.” Today was a good day. Finally a American President did what should have been done for over 5 decades. The only people whove been hurt by the U.S. embargo and lack of diplomatic relations with Cuba have been the Cuban people; a people whom weathered the storm despite all the things previous predidential administrations and the Cuban exiles did to bring them to their knees as they tried to destroy the regime. Ive flown over the island of Cuba on numerous occasions and took pictures of the wonderful landscape. There is no reason why a person like myself isnt allowed to set foot on the ground and visit that country just like Ive done in Panama, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Columbia, St. Croix and Bermuda. I look forward to the day when I can buy tickets to visit Cuba. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.
